Kyle Lowry To Opt-Out of Final Year of Contract, Become Free Agent in Summer

Is this the end of the current Toronto Raptors squad as we know it? There’s a possibility, considering Kyle Lowry is opting out of the final year of his contract with the team and testing out the free agent market this summer. The Raps guard announced the news on Monday, opting out of the $12 million dollars that remain on his four-year deal he signed in 2014.

Earlier this year, Lowry said he wanted to stay in Toronto and actually prefers it, but wants to also hear what other offers are out there for him in the offseason.

Interestingly enough, his motivation for signing this summer is a ring. He told reporters, “A ring. Nothing else. I just want a ring” and that he feels he could do that anywhere he plays.

Of course, we all know that’s not true.

Lowry was sidelined by a sprained ankle in the Eastern Conference semi-finals and did not play in the final two games of the series against the Cleveland Cavaliers, who swept them out.

So where are some good landing spots for him to chase a ring? Maybe the San Antonio Spurs could be a destination. Maybe help the Houston Rockets get over the hump? Or, you know, actually stay in Toronto and lost to King James and company every year.
